Sweet Saturdayz: Pez

Pez is the sweet treat that can't be beat...because it comes with a toy! We love Pez candy so much we wrote our very own acrostic poem about it (and made a video review!):

Proudly Austrian candy.
Erupting with flavor.
Zangy, tangy, sugary sweets.

Yours, Mine, and Zours

In my youth, I have always enjoyed indulging my taste buds with sweet, exciting, and sometimes even sour confections as it is one of the joys of our humanity. I like candy.

My earliest memory of first trying candy is very fuzzy…probably because it was before I could even really talk. I think I was given a piece of a lemon Starburst or some sort of candy. Or perhaps I took it and put in my mouth, because I also vaguely remember it being yanked out of my mouth. OK, so maybe being a kid and liking candy isn’t so unique. We all probably look back at our childhood with nostalgia and remember certain treats that we had a certain devotion to, if you will.

For me, when I discovered these in middle school, Mike & Ike’s Zours did it for me. I distinctly remember picking up a box from Target and trying them out. In the late 90’s, the Zours box dawned a more greening color but still had the funky logo and zany candy characters on the front.
Around this time, I was already well-versed in the sour candy game. I had many a Warhead, Cry-Baby, and Toxic Waste (ask your British uncle). But I had never had Zours and was looking forward to seeing if it was up there with the ever-sacred Warhead or just patronizing us like the “oh-so sour” Razzles.

When I opened the box and poured a few out into my hand, the look and scent of these little uppers for kids didn’t disappoint, but it was time to try them.

***Superfast Edgar Wright-esque cut sequences of punches, fruit juice splashes, and lighting bolts***

OK…these, I dig! While they weren’t as sour as Warhead candy, they lived up to their names, but man, that wasn’t the end of it. That flavor, that powerful flavor of sugary goodness really hit a homerun with me. I mean seriously dude, like, for real – totally! There are tons of candies out there, but no other candy tastes like this one. There is something about Zours that makes it its only thing. It’s almost as if it puts your taste buds in a chokehold and just as it drifts to sleep, it coddles it down to comfort. It is my favorite candy. At some point, I remember not seeing it for awhile.

For years (at least between 2003 and 2014), I thought Mike & Ike discontinued Zours. But one wonderful night in Chinatown, I found them in a candy store. Then, within that month, I found them at a Rite Aid…and then a Safeway. WHAT? Were these extraordinary little confections under my nose the entire time? I went years without my favorite candy and all of a sudden, I’m seeing them everywhere.

Looks like I got a lot of catching up to do!
